Choosing a Metaphor For Your Relationship - Find a Catchy Image For Your Perfect Wedding Ceremony

By: Ann Keeler Evans

A metaphor is an image used to represent another thing. Metaphors differ from similes because they don't use as or like. So you could say that your Love is an exciting game of tennis, with volleys and points and upsets and so much enjoyment.

You want to find one good metaphor to use at your wedding ceremony. (Really, only one!) Metaphors used during our wedding ceremony can settle into your psyches and remain there as reminders of your great love for one another. Ritual activities and metaphors that are used ceremonially will remind forever remind you how you felt at your wedding. Every time you encounter that image it will take you back to what it felt like on the day you married. Something as simple as a metaphor can strengthen your marriage for the rest of your life. Use that metaphor in close proximity to your wedding vows to increase the impact.

Metaphors work. But what you want is for them to work well. You're looking for them to help out your marriage. So, choose a metaphor that will help you and your community understand what you are doing here:

* Find an image that is "contagious" and appealing. It should be something that people can understand quickly. It should be something that speaks to our hearts and helps us understand the people we love.

Hallmark does so well because it uses metaphors that appeal to us. Your job is to find something that appeals specifically to you, but that is, at the same time, completely graspable by your community.

Part of the lovely nature of metaphor is its ability to take something complex and simplify it for us. OH, your love is a game of tennis between two friendly and seasoned competitors. Good volleys, interesting shots, as much interest in an enjoyable game as in winning the point. Got it! (No, really, there are people like that!)

* Find a metaphor that is attractive. Something you would want in your life on a daily basis. Something simple you can work with on a daily basis. Put it in your ceremony to make your ceremony more accessible and more beautiful. Then, put it in your daily life and let it help you grow a great marriage.

Bottom Line?: Give your relationship the chance it deserves to succeed wildly, against all odds! After all, you deserve it. Your relationship deserves it!
